UTMIQ Community

We volunteer our time, knowledge and technology skills to community causes. No cheques, no CSR theatre: just useful work, done properly and measured honestly.

An illustration representing what UTMIQ gives through its community programme: time, knowledge, technology expertise, digital education, mentoring and skills-based volunteering.

Our mission

To put UTMIQ's time, knowledge and technical skills to work for communities and organisations that can use them, and to be honest about what difference it makes.

Skills before money

UTMIQ is a small company. Rather than write cheques to be seen doing good, we start with what we do best: our people's time, knowledge and technical skills. We are not making direct financial donations initially.

Useful over visible

We would rather do a few things properly than many things for show. If we cannot make a real difference on a request, we will say so and point you towards someone who can.

Measured, not marketed

Every project has an agreed goal and a simple way to check whether we reached it. We will share what worked and what did not.

Where we can help

Volunteer contributions, matched to what each partner actually needs.

Digital education

Workshops and sessions on everyday digital skills, using technology safely, and how software gets built.

Good fit for schools, educators and community groups.

Mentoring

One-to-one and small-group mentoring for students, early-career developers and anyone starting out in technology.

Good fit for students and early-career developers.

Technology support for organisations

Practical help for NGOs and community organisations: websites, data and reporting, workflow automation, cloud setup, and a second pair of eyes on the systems they already use.

Good fit for NGOs and community organisations.

Knowledge sharing

Talks, written guides and open source software, such as UTMIQ Agent, shared freely so others can use it and learn from it.

Good fit for developers, teams and learners.

Bigger projects, with the right partners

For larger projects we collaborate with established NGOs and community organisations. The partner, or their external funder, manages the project budget. UTMIQ contributes technical expertise and volunteer time. We do not hold or manage project funds.

The partner leads

  • Owns the project, its goals and the people it serves
  • Manages the budget, whether their own or from an external funder
  • Brings the community context, and sets the safeguarding rules where children or vulnerable people are involved

UTMIQ contributes

  • Technical expertise: design, build, review and advice
  • Volunteer time from our team
  • Training and handover, so the partner can run what we build

How a collaboration works

Four steps, agreed up front, so nobody is guessing.

  1. Step 1: Talk

Tell us what you need. We tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.

  2. Step 2: Agree the scope

Write down what we will do, who leads, the timeframe and how we will know it worked.

  3. Step 3: Volunteer and build

The partner or funder manages the budget. UTMIQ gives expertise and volunteer time.

  4. Step 4: Review and share

We check the results against what we agreed and share what we learned.

How we track impact

Community work should be measured like any other work. For every project we agree a few simple measures at the start and report against them.

Volunteer hours
Time our team gives, recorded for each project.
People reached
Learners taught, mentees supported and staff trained.
Partner outcomes
Success measures the partner sets at the start, and whether they were met.
What we learned
What worked, what did not, and what we would change.

This is a new programme, so there are no results to show yet. When there are, they will be published here.
