Life at UTMIQ
No open-plan office, no ping-pong table, no badge-in culture — not yet, anyway. Today UTMIQ runs remote-first and async by default. We're building toward a physical team hub in Jaffna, on our terms, without giving up the flexibility that got us here.
How we actually work
Not the poster on a wall — the defaults that decide how a normal Tuesday goes.
Async by default
Most things are written down, not said in a meeting someone had to stay up for. If it isn't written down, it didn't happen — and nobody has to be online at the same minute to find out what did.
KPIs, not hours
No activity trackers, no "green dot" pressure. We measure work against agreed KPIs — features shipped, posts and content made, deliverables landed — not hours logged or the tab that's open.
Small enough to know everyone
There's no floor you haven't met. Whoever built the thing is one message away, and "let me check with the team" usually means checking with two people.
A day in the life
Everyone's schedule looks a little different. This is the shape most days take, built around a shared overlap window rather than a shared start time.
-
Step 1: Async check-in
A written update — what shipped, what's next, what's stuck. No stand-up call required to say it.
-
Step 2: Deep work, protected
Calendars blocked, notifications off. The first real block of the day is for building, not for meetings about building.
-
Step 3: Overlap hours
A shared window around Sri Lanka time (GMT+5:30) for pairing, reviews, demos and client calls — together, on purpose.
-
Step 4: Write it down, log off
Decisions and handoffs go where the next person will actually look, so tomorrow doesn't start with "wait, what happened?"
Remote-first today, UTMIQ Hub next
We're not trading remote work for an office. We're adding a place for the parts of the job that a video call handles badly.
Remote-first, everywhere

We embrace constant learning
The stack changes every year. We'd rather build people who can keep up with that than pretend it isn't happening.
Course platform access
Company-paid access to a learning and course platform for everyone on the team — not a vague "ask if you need it" promise, an account you already have.
Ship it, then write it up
Whoever solves something new writes it down for the rest of the team. Knowledge that only lives in one person's head is a liability, not an asset.
Dedicated R&D time
Time set aside to explore new tools and ideas before a client ever needs them, through UTMIQ R&D.
Mentorship first, then apprenticeship work
We hire seniors for the job roles on our careers page — this is a different track. It starts with real mentorship from our engineers, then moves into apprenticeship-style work as you grow into it, built around university or HND classes, not against them. Everyone on the program gets a monthly allowance for their time — a stipend, not a salary.
Looking for a full-time role instead? See open roles.
In their own words
We kept remote-first even as we grew, because it's the reason we could hire the people we wanted. The Jaffna hub isn't walking that back — it's giving the team a place to land, not a place they're required to be.
Sound like your kind of team?
We're small, remote-first, and hiring for real roles — not a talent pipeline for later. Tell us what you're great at.
